CPA Exam
MAc Program CPA Exam Pass Rates Again Surpass National Average

The School of Accountancy is pleased to report the official CPA exam performance of the MAc 2009 graduating class.  Once again, the Auburn MAc Program's CPA exam pass rates surpassed the national average.  The official pass rates are compiled using the students’ official CPA exam score reports.  The average pass rate per section was 82% compared to the national average of 49%.  Of the 32 students in the MAc Class of 2009, 62.5% passed all four parts on their first attempt, nearly double the national pass rate on all four parts of only 31.7%, according to the NASBA (National Association of State Boards of Accountancy).
Dean's Search Update

Focus on the Faculty

LaKami T. Baker, Assistant Professor of Management, was selected as the outstanding reviewer for the entrepreneurship/innovation/ IT track of the 2009 Southern Management Association meeting.  Baker was formally recognized at the meeting, held in Asheville, NC, Nov. 11-14.

James R. Barth, Lowder Eminent Scholar in Finance, was invited to speak on “The Macro Prudential Approach: Developing a Framework for the Macro Prudential Approach to Regulation and Supervision” at the Asia Development Bank Conference on the Global Financial Crisis and Distressed Asset Management in Beijing, China, on Nov. 18-19; “Forecasting Asia, the West, and the World: Investment Takeaways for the Future” at the 2009 Asian Pension Fund Roundtable on Mitigating Uncertainty: Institutional Investors & Risk Management in Bangkok, Thailand, on  Nov. 4-6; and “The Rise and Fall of the U.S. Mortgage and Credit Markets” at the Economic Opportunities in the Presence of a World Financial Crisis in Tegucigalpa, Honduras on Oct. 23-24. He was also interviewed about the financial crisis on NPR's Marketplace on Oct. 23, and China's financial entry into the United States on Voice of America-China on Oct. 7.

Daniel Butler, Thomas Walter Professor and Associate Professor of Marketing, was named as the champion among three finalists of the 2009 Sherwin-Williams Distinguished Teaching Award. The award, now in its 12th year, was presented by the Society for Marketing Advances (SMA) at its Annual Conference in New Orleans, La., Nov. 4-9.   The annual award honors marketing educators for excellence in, and outstanding contributions to, the quality of marketing education over a sustained period of years. The selection process for the SMA award begins in the spring of each year when business schools from around the globe are invited to nominate one marketing professor who meets the qualification for sustained contribution to the discipline.  Finalists make a presentation to a panel of distinguished judges at the SMA Annual Conference.  Among finalists who have received this award in the past are educators selected as the best professor in the entire Colorado State University System, the entire Massachusetts University System and the University of Florida. 

Joe B. Hanna, Professor of Supply Chain Management and Department Chair, presented "Benchmarking for Brokers," at the McLeod Software 2009 Users Conference held in Birmingham, Ala.  Hanna presented the results of the Transportation Intermediaries Association's Quarterly 3PL Market Report which is designed to report industry trends and analysis to be used for benchmarking within the 3PL industry. 

Donald Bergh, Dave Ketchen, Brian Boyd, and Julie Bergh's paper entitled, “New frontiers of the reputation – performance relationship: Insights from multiple theories,” was accepted for publication at the Journal of Management.  Ketchen is the Lowder Eminent Scholar in Entrepreneurship.

Jim Combs, Dave Ketchen, Russell Crook, and Phil Roth's paper, “Assessing cumulative evidence within ‘macro’ research: Why meta-analysis should be preferred over vote counting,” was accepted for publication by the Journal of Management Studies.

Robert Lawson, Associate Professor and co-Director of the Center for International Finance and Global Competitiveness, remains active in his work on Global Economic Freedom with a number of publications and presentations.  

  • Lawson will participate in the upcoming World Economic Forum's Summit on the Global Agenda as a member of the Global Agenda Council on "Benchmarking Progress in Human Society". The World Economic Forum is best known for its annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. The Summit on the Global Agenda is billed as the “World’s Largest Brainstorming” session and will take place from Nov. 20-22 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in partnership with the Government of Dubai. The Summit will bring together over 700 Global Agenda Council Members, representing some of the most innovative and influential thinkers from over 90 countries – including 300 business leaders, 240 academics, 100 leaders from civil society, NGOs and think tanks, over 50 leaders from international organizations and 30 public figures. Lawson was invited to participate based on his work on the Economic Freedom of the World index. This index has been cited in hundreds of academic and popular articles since its inception.   • His paper, “Examining the Hayek-Friedman Hypothesis on Economic and Political Friedman,” with J. R. Clark, has been selected by the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization (forthcoming).
  • A second publication, “Economic Freedom and Peace,” (with J. Hall) appeared in Atlantic Economic Journal, 2009, 37(4), 445-6.  
  • Lawson attended the Mont Pelerin Society meeting, held in Stockholm, Sweden in Sept. 
  • He has also given presentations at several colleges and universities during the past month, including Beloit College, SMU, Clemson University, and Columbus State University.

Amit Mitra, with J.G. Patankar, presented a paper on “Warranty in Service Industries” at the national meeting of the Decision Sciences Institute in New Orleans, La., Nov. 14-17.

Gwinyai Utete recently presented, “Institutional Investor Preferences and Firm Value,” at the Financial Management Association (FMA) conference in Reno, Nev.  The paper was ranked among the top 10% of papers presented, and designated, “Top Session.”

Keven Yost also presented at the FMA conference in Reno.  His paper, co-authored with Mark Bertus and Peter J. DaDalt and Bing Xuan Lin at the University of Rhode Island, was entitled, “Information and Risk:  An Empirical Assessment.”

ATAC partners with EAMC

EAMC East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC) in Opelika, Ala. has partnered with the Auburn Technical Assistance Center (ATAC) at Auburn University to launch a long-term initiative to implement Lean Continuous Improvement throughout the hospital operations.  Dubbed ‘EPIC’ – EAMC Performance Improvement Culture -- EAMC's program represents its commitment to instilling and sustaining a culture of problem solving, standardization and improvement as its standard operating practice.  ‘EPIC’ includes introductory training in Lean Continuous Improvement for various employee groups, coaching and facilitation in conducting multi-day Rapid Improvement Events focused on a variety of EAMC processes; and strategic planning with EAMC’s Administrative Team in rolling out the programs hospital wide.  For more information, contact Mitch Emmons at (334) 844-3881 or emmonmb@auburn.edu.

Tech Tour Birmingham

Birmingham On Oct. 9th, the College of Business and the MIS Advisory Board sponsored Tech Tour Birmingham, a trip for 31 Auburn students and one faculty advisor to Birmingham to learn more about the city and the many career opportunities that exist.  Students heard presentations from business enterprises and community organizations including Blue Cross, Russell Athletics, Innovation Depot, CompassBank, St. Vincent’s Hospital and the Birmingham Community Foundation.  Members of the Birmingham-Jefferson Auburn Alumni Club representing a wide array of businesses also joined the students for a special luncheon.  The event was modeled after the successful 2008 Tour, which took place in Huntsville last fall.

Student News

Clanton Cydney Clanton, a junior in finance, was named SEC Golfer of the Week (Nov. 5), making it her second honor of the season after winning it on Oct. 21.  Clanton, a native of Concord, N.C., is currently ranked second in the nation by Golfweek and has led Auburn in all four of its tournaments this season, compiling a 70.10 stroke average. The Tigers are ranked No. 3 in the latest Golfweek standings and No. 4 in the Oct. 28 Golf World/NGCA Women's Top-25 Coaches' poll.   Clanton wrapped up the fall season Oct. 23-25 by winning the individual title at the NCAA Fall Preview at the Country Club at Landfall in Wilmington, N.C. Playing in an 18-team field that included 17 ranked teams, nine of which were in the top 10, Clanton carded 70s in each of the three rounds to finish at 6-under-par 210. She also led the team to a tie for second in the top-ranked field.  The victory was the second for the season for Clanton as she also won medalist honors at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship. She also finished in the top five of all four of Auburn's fall tournaments.

Two business students were honored with Auburn’s highest athletic awards during halftime ceremonies at the 2009 Homecoming football game against Furman.  Golfer Glenn Northcutt received the Cliff Hare Award, given in memory of Clifford Leroy Hare, a member of Auburn's first football team, professor of chemistry, president of the Southern Conference and longtime chairman of Auburn's Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics.  Gymnast A.J. Mills received the Leah Rawls Atkins Award, in honor of Dr. Leah Rawls Atkins, noted Alabama historian, world champion water skier and the first woman in the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. She also served as Director of the Auburn University Center for the Arts and Humanities.  Both awards are given annually to senior student-athletes "who, in addition to athletic and scholarship achievement, exhibit in great degree the qualities of leadership, integrity and courage."

MillsA four-year letterwinner, Mills recorded 31 event victories during her career, including 14 as a senior. Mills was ranked as high as 10th nationally in the all-around during her senior season and as a junior finished fifth in the all-around at the NCAA Northeast Regionals. She was the 2009 recipient of "The Rock" award, given annually to the most consistent Auburn gymnast.  The Floyds Knobs, Ind., native, was a four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and Auburn Athletics Top Tiger recipient. Twice named an academic All-American, Mills was also a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.  A three-time SEC Good Works Team recipient for her civic involvement, Mills was very active in the community, participating in over 50 events during her Auburn career. Mills was a staple in the Auburn Student Athlete Advisory Committee, serving as the secretary, vice-president and president. She was also an instrumental force in the development of Auburn PRIDE, a sportsmanship initiative created by SAAC two years ago.  A marketing major, Mills has a 3.21 cumulative grade point average and is on track to graduate in May 2010. She plans to attend graduate school at Auburn in Fall 2010.

NorthcuttA four-time letterman, Northcutt was an All-Southeastern Conference performer in 2007 and 2008, and finished his career with a 73.18 scoring average, the eighth best in school history. Northcutt posted 13 top-10 finishes during at Auburn and carded 38 sub-par rounds.   A native of Dothan, Ala., native Northcutt is a four-time Academic All-SEC recipient, a 2009 SEC Community Service team member and a two-time Golf Coaches Association of America All-America scholar. Northcutt is a 2009 Omicron Delta Kappa inductee, Golden Key International Honor Society member and two-time member of Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society.  Northcutt, who carries a 3.51 grade point average, is scheduled to graduate in May 2010 with a degree in Business (marketing).

In Appreciation

PeltonThe annual aviation management reunion, held during the Homecoming weekend, was again a great success.  Jack Pelton, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Cessna Aircraft Company, kicked the weekend’s festivities off on Thursday with his participation in the Aviation Management Distinguished Speaker Series.  On Friday, the Aviation Management Advisory Board held its fall meeting and welcomed three new members:  Ben Boston (Chick-fil-A), Steve Inabinet (Commerce Overseas Corp) and Art Morris (Dothan Regional Airport).  On Saturday, a tailgate event was held in front of the Nichols ROTC Building, complete with hamburgers and hotdogs.  Thanks to all who participated in this year's event.  We hope you can join us again next year.
